The Bengal Tiger

256px-Tiger_facial_marking_Sultan_(T72)_Ranthambhore_India_12.10.2014.jpg (256×384)There are more Bengal tigers than any other type in the world. Most live in India - maybe 1800 - but there are about 500 in Bangladesh, 150 in Nepal and 60 or 70 in Bhutan. Perhaps there are around 2500 in these countries today.

512px-Panthera_tigris_tigris.jpg (512×342)Bengal tigers are the biggest in the world and their teeth are the longest. They are about three metres long from their heads to the ends of their tails. They can also grow to 300 kg. Male tigers take four to five years to grow but females only three to four years. When tigers can get food alone without help from their mothers, they move away and find new land for themselves.

Hunters killed many tigers in the 19th century. Thousands died. Even today, people kill tigers to sell their skins and parts of their bodies. In China, people think that tiger parts are good medicine.

If we are going to save the tigers, we need to protect them and not take the land where they live.
